Abrams’ campaign chair collected millions in legal fees from voting rights organization

Image
Illustration by Nazario Graziano for POLITICO / Getty Images ATLANTA — The voting rights organization founded by Stacey Abrams spent more than $25 million over two years on legal fees, mostly on a single case, with the largest amount going to the self-described boutique law firm of the candidate’s campaign chairwoman. Allegra Lawrence-Hardy, Abrams’ close friend who chaired her gubernatorial campaign both in 2018 and her current bid to unseat Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, is one of two named partners in Lawrence & Bundy, a small firm of fewer than two dozen attorneys. The firm received $9.4 million from Abrams’ group, Fair Fight Action, in 2019 and 2020, the last years for which federal tax filings are available. Lawrence-Hardy declined to comment on how much her firm has collected from Fair Fight Action in 2021 and 2022 — years in which Fair Fight Action v. Raffensperger , for which Lawrence-Hardy was lead counsel, had most of its courtroom activity. Fair...

Jim Watson/AFP via Getty Images Recent polling shows a majority of Latino voters plan to back Democratic candidates in next month’s midterm elections, continuing a trend that has held for decades. But that support is on the decline. While Democratic strategists make renewed pledges to woo Latino voters, Republicans are also making inroads to appeal to the second-largest and fastest growing group in the U.S. electorate. Democratic strategist Chuck Rocha worked on both of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ I-Vt.) presidential runs and told NPR that while Senate campaigns have been airing Spanish-language ads for more than six months, a lack of outreach in races for the House of Representatives could cost the party a...

Allison Dinner/AFP via Getty Images U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported 2.3 million migrant apprehensions at the southern border in the last 12 months — surpassing the record high set last year. The annual total — which includes people who were stopped at the border more than once — jumped by 37% from 1.7 million the year before. That isn’t to suggest 2022 saw the largest number of people trying to enter the U.S. illegally. For instance, the Department of Homeland Security estimates that there were nearly 4 million unauthorized border crossings in 2000 but only 1.6 million were counted. Ove...

Well-prepared leaders embrace risk – Aon report

Image
Well-prepared leaders embrace risk and make better decisions during times of economic uncertainty, according to a new study by Aon. Aon’s 2022 Executive Risk Survey, Making Better Decisions in Uncertain Times, was compiled from more than 800 interviews with C-suite and senior executives from companies with 500 or more employees. Respondents were asked questions about what set leaders who were well-prepared for a recession apart, as well as how they were making better decisions to position their companies for growth. A large majority (79%) of business leaders expect a recession this year. However, only 35% reported feeling very prepared for that recession. “Strong, prepared leaders are essential to protecting an organization’s resilience and finding growth opportunities in the face of heightened volatility,” said Greg Case, CEO of Aon. “This year’s report reveals that leaders who are very prepared to embrace weather economic challenges calculated risk-taking as an engine of growth...

Cooper Green Mercy Adds Portal to Help Patients Better Navigate Health Care

Image
By Bob Shepard UAB News Cooper Green Mercy Health Services has added an online patient portal messaging system to help patients navigate the ins and outs of managing their health care. The portal helps knock down barriers to care and provides for rapid, secure communication between patients and their care providers. The portal allows patients to send a private, secure message to their health care team and get a response within two business days. The portal also facilitates prescription renewals and lists upcoming appointments. Lab results and health record information is accessible to patients from the portal. “An online patient portal provides an important, timely and safe link between a patient and their care team,” said Vicki Hale, manager of Quality and Patient Safety with Cooper Green. “Instead of waiting on their next appointment or sitting on hold trying to get a prescription refilled, patients are able to communicate with their providers with a single message. Mary Trump Calls Donald Trump A Mass Murderer For His Handling Of Covid Pandemic

Image
Psychologist and author Mary Trump has accused her uncle, former President Donald Trump of being a mass murderer for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. “He essentially hamstrung the CDC and prevented it, prevented them from doing what it was designed to do, which was to protect the American people from things like COVID-19,” Mary Trump said on “The Mary Trump Show.” “Which resulted in the unnecessary deaths, and therefore purposeful deaths, of hundreds of thousands of Americans.” “That alone should have landed the former, whatever the fuck we want to call him, the mass murderer criminal Donald Trump in prison,” she added. “And yet I don’t I don’t see anything being made of that.” Mary Trump discussed a new report from the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis that showed how poorly COVID-19 was handled during the Trump years. The Trump administration underplayed concerns about the seriousness of the pandemic and compromised public health guidance to a...

In the midst of his winning streak, Dariush has called for a crack at the 155-pound gold numerous times. During the UFC 280 post-fight press conference, Dariush once again pounded the table for his opportunity (via MMAJunkie ). “If that didn’t do it, what else can I do?” Dariush said at the post-fight news conference. “If that performance, beating a guy like Gamrot – who some said he was undefeated coming into this fight – like beating a guy like that … Obviously, I didn’t finish him. He’s a lot tougher than I thought. I got kind of close in that last round. “But if that’s not the proper way to ask (for a title shot), I need somebody to t...

Munich Re provides insight on Q3 results

Image
Munich Re, which is releasing its finalized third quarter results on November 8, has provided a peek into the reinsurer’s quarterly performance. “In Q3 2022, Munich Re registered higher-than-average major-loss expenditure in property-casualty reinsurance,” noted the company. “It is expected that Hurricane Ian caused roughly €1.6 billion in losses after retrocession for Munich Re; this estimate remains subject to substantial uncertainty. “Depending on the outcome of the ongoing quarterly closing – and on account of sustained encouraging operating performance in all lines of business and a positive one-off effect at ERGO Life and Health Germany – Munich Re anticipates a quarterly profit of about €0.5 billion. ” For the year, meanwhile, Munich Re said it is still expecting about €3.3 billion in profit. “However,” the reinsurer conceded, “it has become significantly more challenging to meet the 2022 profit target – which is subject to the realization of currently anticipated positiv...

Yankees’ Nestor Cortes Exits ALCS vs. Astros with Groin Injury

Image
Elsa/Getty Images New York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. exited Game 4 of the American League Championship Series in the third inning with an apparent injury, per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch . The Yankees later announced that Cortes was dealing with a groin ailment, per ESPN’s Joon Lee . Cortes gave up a three-run game-tying home run to Astros rookie Jeremy Peña before being pulled by manager Aaron Boone. He was replaced by Wandy Peralta out of the bullpen. It was clear Cortes was struggling before being removed. Boone and the team’s athletic trainer came out to the mound to check on him, but he appeared to insist he was fine before giving up the home run to Peña. According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi , Cortes’ four-seam fastball velocity dropped to 88 mph in the third inning, down from 92 mph in the first inning. The removal of Cortes was a tough blow for the Yankees, who entered Sunday’s game on the brink of elimination and needed a solid outing from one of their top star...

Woodward

Image
The voice of Bob Woodward is well known in Washington and former President Trump’s is familiar worldwide. But we listen to both in a new way in Woodward’s new audiobook The Trump Tapes. Woodward has released the transcript and raw audio of a score of interviews he did with Trump in 2019 and 2020. Trump has responded by saying on Fox News that he will sue Woodward (calling him “very sleazy”), not because the tapes are inaccurate but because Trump says they belong to him and he needs to be compensated for their sale. The interviews were arranged to inform Woodward’s second boo k on the Trump presidency, Rage, which appeared just before Trump lost his bid for re-election. The president had not cooperated with the reporter’s earlier Trump book , Fear, a highly critical study that appeared in 2018. Initially conducted in the Oval Office, the series continued for months with Trump often making surprise phone calls to Woodward at home or on his cellphone. In these hours of Trum...
